Turisti a Sparta.
2019
The date of Albert Jouvin de Rochefort’s journey, recounted in his Voyage d’Italie et de Malthe, in 1672, places him among the authors who were at the forefront of the Grand Tour phenomenon, which experienced its golden age between the second half of the 18th century and the first half of the following century. Palermo was the first stop on his journey to Sicily and Jouvin was fascinated by it. The closeness of the author to the baroque aesthetic is widely reflected in Palermo not only in the main monuments of the city, but in the entire urban layout, conceived as a Theatre of the World, in which coexist, in a multitude of monumental and decorative solutions, the fundamental social and cult…
2018
The essay examines the main citations of decorative works of art found in the journals of British travelers of the Grand Tour between XVIII and XIX century. In the context of these works, the attention devoted to the decorative arts is much less than that devoted to archeology, painting or sculpture, both because the culture of the time did not consider them yet at the level of the so-called major arts, and because the authors often have little competence in the field of the artistic context. The antiquarian authors of travel reports, then, are clearly more interested in classical art than in that of later or contemporary times. Therefore the citations of the works of decorative art in the …
The Sicily of the Voyage Pittoresque, with a Quick (and Very "Personal") Gaze at the Travel Literature
2019
Travel literature does not constitute an objective source: neither the images nor the texts escape the cliches of the time in which they were written. In the age of the Grand Tour, western culture appropriated the history of Sicily and the South, andit did so by selecting and distorting data and information. From a personal point of view, the author underlines the legacies, born between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which still condition current historiography, perception of places and the collective imagination. Travel literature does not constitute an objective source: neither the images nor the texts escape the clichés of the time in which they were written. In the age of the …
Between sacred and profane: religious art in sicily in the diary of a spanish traveller of the eighteenth century
2019
The diary of Antonio Desbrull y Boíl De Arenos's trip to Sicily offers the possibility to observe directly the perception of the sacred art of the author, characterized by an enlightened cultural profile, but far from the neoclassical taste that is the fundamental trait common to many of the contemporary travelers. Desbrull's testimony also allows us to examine some of the main religious buildings on the island, the works contained therein and the architectural decoration, an expression of a baroque taste that strikes and fascinates the author. Sacred art is considered here as a mere aesthetic phenomenon, devoid of the spiritual dimension that lies at the basis of both the commissioning of …
Graphic readings and digital configurations: Akragas, Girgenti and Agrigento
2018
The study deals with a graphic analysis of the city of Agrigento through the identification of the territorial, urban and architectural peculiarities that have designed its evolution. Starting from the landscape representations realized since the sixteenth century, the views from the sea by Spannocchi, the glances on the apric territory by Pancrazi, the Hellenic ruins inside the medieval Girgenti by Martorana and the Grand Tour travelers’ productions, the urban transformations of Agrigento are reconstructed starting from the points of view adopted by the draftsmen. The aim is to provide a description through images of the multiple points of view with respect to which the territory has been …
2020
The attention that is dedicated to the Decorative Arts in the travelers' diaries is much inferior in comparison to that one turned to the archaeology, to the painting or to the sculpture. As far as jewelry is concerned, in particular, the growing admiration for the craftsman's mastery was flanked by the traditional consideration of its splendor as a status symbol and the ancestral conception of precious stones as bearers of particular magical or apotropaic powers. It is, however, natural that the quotations of jewels in the diaries of the Grand Tour are in small numbers compared, for example, to those relating to archaeological ruins, and their collection is the result of targeted research …
2015
The travel to Italy became a literary genre within the tradition of the Grand Tour. This tradition contributed to the composition of books of travels to Italy inside the English, French, German, North American, Russian, Dutch, etc. literatures. Although the European critical studies denied the incorporation of this cultural and literary phenomenon to the Spanish tradition, Spain do has a solid tradition in this kind of books of travels to Italy. Without doubt, its main example is Cartas familiares, written in the XVIIIth century by Juan Andrés. This article analyses the rhetorical and thematic importance of this book in the context of Western and Spanish.
